How To: Plan A Party

Fun Fact. I love planning party’s and events.

It brings me pure excitement.

Most recently someone asked me what my favorite part of planning events and I was stuck for a little bit. I really do love everything about it, even the hiccups.

I’ve been working in this field professionally for some time and I’ve come up with a little worksheet for each event or party I plan.

Disclaimer: I use this for larger parties. You can totally use it for smaller parties if you want too!

Budget – Be realistic, how much are you willing to spend on EVERYTHING (food, beverages, space rental, party favors etc.) This ensures that you don’t over spend and purchase only what you need for the festivities.

Location & Date – Do this early, especially if you need to rent out a space. The earlier the better! Also consult with some of the party goers to make sure the date works.

Theme – This is very important! This ties in the the decor and sometimes the type of food and beverage you are going to serve. For example, if your party is Luau themed, you probably don’t want to serve your guests greek food or tacos? You know?

Decor – This also goes with the theme. I love hitting up my local party store for decor but to be honest my favorite thing is to make decorations myself. Be realistic, and make sure it’s doable! I don’t know how many times I believed that I could make something on my own and it turned out to be a hot mess. So buy what you need and only make what you’re comfortable with. Pinterest is my BEST friend. When I’m in the early stages of planning I make a Pinterest board dedicated to decor.

Food & Drink – This another very important step especially if you decide to cater, you should first talk to potential caters to make sure your party is something they’ll be able to do. When you get the okay, place your food order! Now if your caterer provides beverages I always suggest taking it, it’s less work for you! But…if they don’t offer it no worries! I found the coolest little cheat sheet for beverages (and food). If you decide to make food yourself, plan it out in advance so you’re not running around the day of.

A graphic explaining how much food and drink you need to serve at a party.

Guest list – Make this in advance so you know how much food, drink and party favors to order.

Party Favors – You don’t need to have party favors if you don’t want to. I always like to give people a little something to remember the event. For my aunt birthday we had candy filled wine glasses (from etsy) and it was a huge hit!

Social Media Stuff – Create a hashtag! They’re easy to come up with and it’s a great way to keep track of photos of your party as well! Although hashtags are awesome Snapchat geofilters are my favorite for parties! They’re customizable, inexpensive and everyone loves them!

I hope you found this post helpful!

2016 Reflections

Image of a cup of coffee, a book, and photos of Dahlia

2016.

I brought in 2016 alone in a hotel room in Iowa. I was following the presidential campaigns for my job at the time and I remember being a little sad because I was away from my family and friends, but also optimistic about 2016 would bring. So in my little hotel room nestled right next to the Des Moines International Airport I promised to work hard and be open to whatever came my way.

Did I work hard? Yeah.

I produced some of my best work.

Was I open to whatever came my way? Yeah.

2016 brought me more independence, a strong sense of confidence, discipline and patience; all characteristics I lacked the year before. I’m feeling more blessed and thankful than ever.

In 2017 I’m going to work much harder to manifest what I want in my life. Exhibit gratitude on a daily basis and take better care of myself.

All things that are easier said than done.

It’s going to be a journey, but that’s the fun part.

2016, peace out.

2017, Hey how’s it going? I’ve been expecting you.

These Heels Were Made For Walkin’

These heels were make for walkin’ and that’s just what they’ll do!

The holidays are officially upon us which means endless parties filled with eggnog, white elephant gift exchanges and if you’re lucky dancing to Mariah Carey’s “All I want for Christmas” for the hundredth time (TYD Holiday Playlist HERE). I don’t know what it is but once the eggnog and starts flowing people (mostly me) think they’re the best dancers in the world.  You’re wearing your favorite outfit and bomb shoes, so you’re feeling pretty good. It’s all fun and games until your feet starting screaming bloody murder and make you wish you never chose cuteness over practicality. This scenario happens all too often to me.

Luckily I have a small secret weapon…

Sole Patches.

Not to be confused with the small patches of hair on a gentleman’s face.

Sole Patches are cushion adhesives that you stick to the ball and heel of your shoes or feet. These little cushions are my new favorite thing, ever. They’re shock-absorbing, anti-microbial, odor and moisture repelling! This means your feet will remain dry and painless all night. ALL NIGHT. This means no more wearing your sneakers or flip flops until you arrive at you destination and quickly switch into your heels. Honestly, that’s just too much work. Carrying around 2 pairs of shoes? Nobody has time for that.

I first tried out Sole Patches with my favorite, yet very painful pair of boots. I put the cushions at the balls of my feet, since that’s where I feel the most pain. So I wore the boots to work standing and walking around for 8 hours, and guess what? NO PAIN. Usually two hours into wearing these boots I experience some serious discomfort, and by the end of the day I need to soak my feet. To be quite honest, I kind of forgot I was wearing them.

Naturally I tried Sole Patches with all my really uncomfortable shoes and I got the same result, no pain.

Do you know what this means?

No more two pairs of shoes!

No catching Uber’s a block from your destination because you can’t walk!

Dancing the night away without consequences!

It’s like a whole new world!

If you’re interested in bringing in the new year on the right foot (see what I did there?) check out Sole Patches!

Gift Guide: For Him

The air is kinda crisp (I say kinda because it was a solid 50-something degrees yesterday). Malls are filled to the brim, and ABC Family (I refuse to call it Freeform) has a certain theme going. It’s the Holiday’s!

As promised, I have created a holiday gift guide for the men in your life. Gift Guide: For Her

Gift Guide Cover Photo. An image of a nicely wrapped present with polka dotted wrapping paper and a brown label on top.

The air is kinda crisp (I say kinda because it was a solid 50-something degrees yesterday). Malls are filled to the brim, and ABC Family (I refuse to call it Freeform) has a certain theme going.

That means it’s the Holiday’s! It’s easily my favorite time of the year. Spending time with my family, eating a lot of holiday themed food, it really doesn’t get any better than that. Although the holidays is a very joyous occasion, there can be some added stress especially in the gift-giving department. I’ve been known to fly a little too close to the cuckoo’s nest searching for the perfect gift for friends and family. If you have difficulties finding gifts for loved one’s please stay tuned for this two-part gift giving post. This post is focusing on a gift guide for the ladies in your life.

October Favorites {Instagram Edition}

Is it too early for October Favorites? If so, I’m sorry because that whats happening today haha.

If you’re like myself you probably spend an unhealthy amount of time on Instagram. I know it’s bad but first thing in the morning after I’ve meditated and had coffee, I check my feed. This is an integral part of my morning, how else am I suppose to know what going on? Ya know? Then afterwards I catch up on what’s going on in the world, and by that I mean I read the skim and read whatever NYT notifications are on my dashboard. Instagram before world news? That’s just how the cookie crumbles!

Naturally I have some favorite grammers this month. Their esthetic is on POINT and I’m constantly asking myself “where can I get that?!” Here are my top 5 favorite Instagrammers for the month of October!

The Invisible Majority

I am part of the invisible majority.

You see, 67 percent of US women are a size 14 or larger.

This fact is especially interesting since this isn’t represented in mainstream media.

The unbalance is kind of horrifying and I’ve known this for a while now. So horrifying that when it came time pick a topic for my master’s thesis I automatically chose this topic. It was  relevant, and something no one really wanted to talk about, so naturally I gravitated towards it.
